Cat Calls - A rant

It's not normal for me to do these sorts of posts and I rarely get angry about such trivial things but driving the other day on a dual carriage I experienced my first on the road cat call.

A drive through cat call if you will, minus sadly the mcfluffy and chicken nuggets.

Laughable really, if it wasn't insanely dangerous, slowing down on the outside overtaking lane to speak to me through the window for 4-5 minutes veering into my lane.

Strangely young man in the cap and grubby stained tracksuit I didn't find your aggressive shouting attractive. Nor did I think I myself was particularly attractive in leggins an oversized jumper, no make up, with my special driving shoes on (21 going on 80).

I don't think I ever have or will hear of a love at first shout on the dual carriage way- sorry to burst your bubble.

I am not sure what you expected, to intimidate me? To shower me with aggressive and demeaning language from your ford fiesta. What startled me the most is how you thought it was appropriate to address any woman in this manner. Would you do this to your Mum? Your employer? I for one highly doubt that.

This isn't my first experience of a catcall, would it be appropriate if I was wearing a dress and heels? No. Would it be appropriate if I was wearing a jumper and leggins. No. For those who say take it as a compliment, I find these situations intimidating and often very frightening, not in any way a compliment.

I don't feel the butterflies when my friends or myself get honked at walking across the road. So next time you think its a compliment to toot or shout from your car at any woman or man for that matter, I suggest you enquire about the definition of a 'compliment'.

Raw Protein Snickers

Whenever I look on instagram I trawl through hundreds of photos of healthy 'cheat foods' which seem impossibly difficult to make with elaborate expensive ingredients which are difficult to get my hands on. So I decided to show you my quick and easy recipe for raw snickers! I made these using chocolate brownie whey protein powder but you do not need to add this, just use oats and ground almonds.

Ingredients:

Base:

2 cups of oats
1 tbsp of chocolate brownie whey protein powder ( I get mine from MY PROTEIN)
2 tbsp of ground almonds

Blend all together and press down to cover the floor of your container

Goey Centre:

Dates (any kind, no need to get the fancy expensive ones, just soak them for a little longer, I leave mine up to 12 hours, but 1/2 would do the trick)
2 tbsp of Peanut Butter
1 tsp of Coconut Oil
A handful of almonds (I used sliced almonds in this recipe)

Blend. Pour on top of base mixture

Chocolate Topping:

2 squares of 90% lindt chocolate
2 tsp of coconut oil

Heat both of these together to get a runny liquid, then pour over the two layers

Freeze for 1 hour and enjoy!

I really enjoyed making these snacks! Do you like these sorts of recipes? Would you like to see more on my blog? Please let me know in the comments!

N07 Total Renewal: Brasivol Dupe

I stumbled across this scrub after scouring high and low for a dupe for Brasivol. Those of you who are not familiar with Brasivol or weren't *cries*  it was a aluminium oxide based scrub which did wonders for easily blocked pores leaving you with super soft skin. Unfortunately, its been discontinued. Who knows why. Alas the only available one I could find was £150 on Amazon... yes you heard right, probably was the last one to exist on the planet. So on my next trip to my dermatologist I asked him WHY?! To which he looked blankly at me and said this contained the same ingredients to get a grip and be on my way.

First Impressions: This scrub is quite expensive for the amount you get £11 for a small little tube however it does do the job and fills brasivols hole in my heart. It contains aluminium oxide (like brasivol) and has the same gritty texture. It takes off all of my make up and you only need a small amount. On the packet it says only use a few times a week but I use this every day as I did with brasivol, but you know your skin, if its too much, stop. Its all about how long you rub your face for so don't go overboard please.

I really like this scrub, its no frills, no nonsense but does what it says on the tin!

Have you tried this scrub? Do you know why/where Brasivol has gone?

Natural Talcum Alternative

Ingredients:Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Magnesium Carbonate, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, Pogostemon Cablin Leaf Oil, Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Styrax Benzoin Resin Extract, Achillea Millefolium Oil, *Linalool, *Limonene, *Citronellol, *Geraniol, *Benzyl Alcohol, *Citral, *Naturally occur in essential oils listed

Talcum powder is really my go to after a shower or a bath. Call me crazy but it relaxes me and makes me feel clean and soft. However, recently I have learned that talcum powder by a popular baby brand may actually be doing more harm than good after reading rather frightening articles online. Disheartended by this I stopped using it and scoured for natural NON TALC alternatives. There isn't really that much out there sadly, the few I tried were either gritty or yellowy substances which left me feeling oily.

SENSPA has made a non talc with cornflower, it has the consistency of talc but without any of the nasty chemicals. I especially love how SENSPA  list all the ingredients so you actually know what you are putting on your skin and the majority are all natural. This is incredibly important to me as our skin is the largest organ in our body so I am incredibly aware of what goes on it! Also in a world being taken over by synthetic smells I appreciate good natural smelling essential oils.

The consistency of this power is exactly like the normal baby talcum except the scent is divine- a mix of rose and lavender. When rubbed in it completely disappears and is absorbed. The scent lasts for a few hours too. I popped this on after I had showered when leaving the gym to meet my friend for a coffee and she complimented my scent! I had no perfume on just this stuff! I am very impressed and I can breathe a sigh of relief as its 97% natural! For new Mum's I would recommended checking this out if you are looking for an alternative!

Its £4.50 from waitrose and on offer at the moment 3 for 2!

Have any of you tried this? What do you think?

*This is not a sponsored post I just am a kook for talcum

The White Company: Home Fragrance

Image from thewhitecompany.com

I don't know about you but I relish the experience of going to the bathroom in a hotel or restaurant. The folded flannels in a wicker basket, the essential oil soap and hand moisturiser, the freshly cut flowers and the reed diffuser wafting citrus scents. However sad this makes me I want to create this chic fresh environment for all of my house guests.

Albeit maybe not the fresh flannels - ain't nobody got time for that.

Now its coming to spring and I am growing tired by my left over christmas yankee  cinnamon diffuser. So I popped into my local white company to have a peruse at some fresh spring home fragrances.

So I thought I would share with you my recent purchases at the White Company, so, if like me, you have a weird obsession with scents and home vibes read on.

Image from thewhitecompany.com

The diffuser I bought is Verveine. The smell reminds me of grating a fresh lemon on holidays in in the South of France while cooking, a truly happy and uplifting fragrance. I placed this in my hallway to greet guests entering my house and have swapped the reeds over every couple of weeks to retain the fresh citrus scent. It is supposed to last 3 months so I cannot comment on that as of yet but the staying power of the scent is truly worth the price (£25, available from here), as the scent permeates through the whole house and not just one room unlike other brands. What are your favourite scents for summer?

PIXI Glow Tonic Review

After struggling with my skin with hormones and university stress (alcohol and diet sorry Mum!) I decided I needed to stop swapping and changing my routine as soon as I had a flare up. I panic at the first sign of redness or a spot and throw 10% Panoxyl and dove soap at my face creating peeley red mess which isn't pretty. My new years resolution is to actually try skin care routines for around 3 weeks and if it doesn't work I can justify throwing the £28 cleanser in the bin, rather than leaving it on my bathroom shelf for 6 months until I panic again and try something new. Sound familiar or is just me?

I first came across this toner from Caroline Hirons (I am probably Caroline Hirons biggest fan.) I have been to see dermatologists and nothing they have given me have worked except her no nonsense advice which I will be eternally grateful for! So I religiously follow her cleansing cheat sheet routine and this was a recommendation from her.So I have altered my routine to a balm cleanse, acid toner, hydrate tone and moisturise every morning and evening.

The results:

10/10

The bottle is tinged orange to give the appearance of an orange liquid and the toner itself is only slightly coloured. The screw cap is easy to pop on and off and the lid allows a little to drop out slowly. This toner is very similar to the Bravura toner and smells very similar due to similar ingredients. However, Bravura's toner is much smaller (150ml) and £12.40, whereas PIXI is £18 for 250ml from Marks and Spencer so you get more bang for your buck with PIXI!

The smell is a fresh, comforting citrus and aloe vera smell. I add a few drops to a fresh cotton pad after balm cleansing and sweep it over active spots or indeed those under the skin ones and hold the cotton pad until the sting subsides and the bleeding stops. I do look quite red after this so I enjoy taking the redness down with the body shops aloe calming cleanser which does the job nicely and use a few drops of Clarins lotus oil.

The toner is gentle enough for my sensitive skin, smells amazing and the best part it actually works. In the morning I wake up with smoother skin, with a reduction in size of active spots. So if you are looking for an acid toner but unsure if it will actually work? Take it from someone who has tried a lot of disappointing products, that this does!

Caitlyn Jenner: Brave?

After watching I am Caitlyn with my Mother tonight, I speculated the question of what makes us brave? What attributes do we give to someone who is brave? Are they strong mentally and physically? Do they fight battles, protect the vulnerable? This question is different for everyone of us. For most however, I would say that the definition of brave is overcoming a fear. However this fear is represented, such as physical danger or mental anxiety, the conquering of such in my eyes makes you brave. What has caught my attention recently was the backlash over Caitlyn Jenner receiving a bravery award. I have seen many comments comparing her to a soldier or war hero, stating she is unworthy. I am tied between two sides of this comparison. I have no doubt in my mind someone who is risking their life, facing death to help others, is brave. However, lets go back to these qualities which make us brave. If you are bullied and gather the courage to dismiss these people who bring you pain. You are brave. You get through a life threatening illness. You are brave. We all have obstacles which we have to overcome which is worthy of the title of brave. However, we do not win awards, granted. I am a firm believer that you should always be yourself, whoever that may be. I do not think its right people bash someone just because they do not represent their definition of braveness. Nor do I think anyone deserves an award more than a soldier who risks their life on a daily basis to protect us.

You can not give awards for the infinite definitions of what brave stands for. This award signifies that we live in a world where its considered brave to be yourself....

For those who disagree, I invite you to dig a little deeper. We shouldn’t be aggravated by the definition of what brave is but instead take issue with the regimented ideals of normality, that has made being yourself a fear. What I take from this dispute is the important theme of acceptance. Acceptance to be who you are. I think overcoming any obstacle however big or small is brave. You should take a moment each day to realise how great you are. Thank yourself for being you, to accept yourself, love yourself. We live in a world where we experience increased negativity from others, online or offline. Someone is ready and waiting to negatively review you so why do it to yourself? Its time to give yourself a bravery award and be your authentic self.

*Note: I am not comparing bravery, my aim for this post is to simply discuss the definition of brave.

BOOTEA Review

Recently, after hearing the hype I decided to try BOOTEA before going on holiday in an attempt to cleanse and combat my bloating issues. I have mixed thoughts regarding the whole experience. The morning tea tasted un offensive, like lemon green tea, I added a little honey some mornings when I wanted something sweeter, I do reccomened adding a teaspoon of honey if green tea isn't for you. However, I could have just bought green tea with lemon which is £1.69 on Ocado. A whole lot cheaper than £19.99 for a 14 day detox from BOOTEA and tastes the same.

What perhaps ruined this whole experience for me was the price of the tea and more importantly the bed time tea. The website states "You should be aware that the Bedtime Cleanse tea bags will most likely induce a laxative effect. We therefore advise that the first time you use this tea bag should be on a weekend or a day off (giving yourself time to see how your body reacts to the ingredients & you can go to the toilet when necessary). The effects are not THAT serious, however we don’t want any embarrassing situations." I disagree with this statement, the effects for me were rather serious. After brewing the tea in a mug for 3 minutes I drank it and awoke in the morning with stomach cramps and had to run to the loo. Thinking I may have brewed the tea for too long the next time I used the tea I left the tea for about a minute thinking the effects would be less intense. I was wrong. I still had cramps the next morning and had to run to the bathroom. However, I accept that this is not true for everyone as my friend also tried the tea and did not have the same embarrassing and painful bathroom symptoms. However, I will NOT buy this product again and if I did in the future I would look for a cheaper alternative. I also have concerns which the dailymail brought up regarding the issues with contraceptive pill and this tea. A little alarming that something so serious is not directly on the packaging just on the website...... but thats just my opinion.

*This tea was bought with my own money and is my own review.

Travel Blog: Grand Hotel Des Alps Chamonix

Recently I stayed in the Grand Hotel Des Alps in Chamonix. The experience was a delight from start to finish. I have regularly stayed in this hotel and it is perfect with views of Mont Blanc and terraces where you can here the fresh glacier river running below the hotel. It was the perfect place to unwind with a cocktail in the sunshine while looking at the beauty of Mont Blanc.

We took the cable car and train up the mountain which I recommend you do if you visit and explore the glacier! The views were incredible!

As a geography student this was a perfect opportunity for me to widen my glacial knowledge! The hotel is luxurious, our  Mount Blanc room had a balcony over looking the river and mountains. The beds were so comfortable and the duvets out of this world. We slept with the windows open to be woken by natural sunlight and to fall asleep to the sound of water. It was such a relaxing stay and I am itching to go back.
